Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. James 5:13-16*
God is a God of law and order. His creation is established according to certain regulated principles. It logically follows that any offering of worship to Him should be orderly and dignified. When a group of people come together for a common purpose, it is best if there is some sort of a plan to be followed. The Book of Common Prayer is one such plan. It contains everything necessary to give the spirit of our corporate worship a proper framework of order. It is full of songs of praise, petitions for forgiveness, prayers of intercession and thanksgiving. It sets forth the rites used from the earliest days of Christianity for the administration of the Christian Sacraments. Its lectionary takes us through the entire Bible once a year, in an orderly progression tied to the ancient Church Calendar. In short - it is a work of art. After all, Worship is an art. Devotional expression requires training and exercise just as much as musical or literary expression. Throughout history, certain gifted people have devoted themselves to the art of worship. Certain methods have been tried, tested, and found to be most conducive to the proper expression of common or united worship. This accumulated experience has been distilled and conserved in the historical liturgies of the Church. Next to the Bible itself, no other book has played a more significant role in the religious life of the English-speaking world than the Book of Common Prayer.

Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:13-18* |
